The Butterfly Effect: An Origami-inspired Custom Chair Design
We are back after a long hiatus to share a new collaboration with our talented friends, Jules Wilson Design Studio. Several months ago we had the opportunity to sit down with Jules Wilson and her design team to sketch out some shared inspiration for this bespoke signature chair collection for the Banyan tree garden at the Lilia Waikiki, a luxury mixed-use development in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Our final design emerged from the concept of a blooming lotus flower, Asian sculpture, as well as Japanese origami for a piece we ended up calling, the Origami Butterfly Chair. Our objective was to create 10 weather-resistant custom outdoor chairs with natural elements and unique sculptural form.
Keeping durability top of mind, we went with a lightweight aluminum to form the base of the patio chair. The BASILE engineering team put in considerable hours mapping out precise geometric planes for the winged design that were made possible with our new tube laser cutter.
Such complex cuts were meticulously done with this fiber laser tool (the first of its kind in San Diego) as well as by hand.
